Writing Workshop

Ruby 4 Noobs

Ever wanted to be able to build a website? Don't know the basics of where to start, but can see the value in knowing? We can teach you how. Ruby on Rails is the website development framework that can help you turn out powerful websites with loads of control, relatively fast and easily. And so we're running a workshop to teach you Ruby on Rails.

What do you mean, teach me how to build a website?

Great question! We're going to run you through the basics of developing a website in Ruby on Rails and provide you with a basic knowledge of Ruby, HTML, CSS, Rails and some deployment tools to get you well on the way to becoming a Ruby master. Although it's called Ruby 4 Noobs the focus is more on learning how to create, develop and deploy a Rails application.

The idea is that there are people who have great ideas for websites and web applications, however don't have the tools and the skills to make it happen. We believe that Ruby on Rails is the best tool to turn an idea quickly and easily to a web application, and then scale it up to be everything it can be. There are no pre-requisite skill sets required, which means we'll be keeping things high level and quite simple. By the end of the course you should have a basic understanding of how to create a Rails application and make it your own.

The course is aimed at people who have never programmed before. In that regard, if you have knowledge of Ruby, Rails, HTML or even what a database is you will need to tune out during parts of the workshop where we run through all of that.

Interesting - when and where is it held?

The workshop will be made up of a number of sessions (yet to be determined) and run each Thursday night at 5:30 in the Inspire9 offices:

9/83 Dover Street, Richmond Victoria

Sessions will run for around an hour and a half and will be fairly hands on. We'll aim for around 4 sessions in total, but then provide the opportunity to expand your knowledge further. Everyone attending the workshop is required to bring a laptop, which will function as your development environment for the period of the workshop.

Sounds great, where do I sign up?

To sign up shoot an email to workshops@inspire9.com.au and we'll provide details of the next event. Spots are limited, so that we can offer people the best experience possible - so if you don't get in this time round you'll surely get in the next.

Sweet, and the cost?

At the moment the course is free, with the opportunity to donate. In order to create a sustainable model we may introduce a small fee down the track if donations aren't enough to cover resources.
